The Mid-Coast Transit Project is an 11-mile long, $1.5 billion extension of the San Diego Trolley light-rail system from the existing Old Town Transit Center to the University of California, San Diego campus and ending in University Towne Centre. This project includes eight new stations, river crossings, rail crossings, freeway crossings, and three viaducts covering over 3.15 miles. Other improvements include pedestrian bridges, retaining walls, at-rail track, ground improvement, and channel realignment.

EMI is providing geotechnical design consulting services to the lead Project Management Consultant for San Diego Associated Governments. Work includes review of geotechnical design and reports, project plans and specifications for technical accuracy, compliance with local, state and federal design codes, and constructability. Design challenges include variable geologic conditions along the long project alignment, high seismicity, fault rupture, soil liquefaction, lateral ground spreading, landslides, compressible soils, and deep foundation design.
