EMI served as the geotechnical design consultant for the Metro Link Union Station (Link US) project in Los Angeles, CA. This rail improvement project includes reconfiguration of entry tracks at Union Station and extension of existing stub-end tracks through a viaduct to cross over the US-101 freeway. EMI performed a field investigation, prepared a geotechnical data report, and served as the geotechnical engineering design consultant for the new viaduct.

Just south of US-101, the new viaduct will cross over the intersection of Center Street and Commercial Street with limited overhead clearance. The project proposes to lower the intersection by several feet to allow for adequate clearance. The Metro Red Line passes beneath the intersection through twin bored tunnels embedded in ground that was chemically grouted. To address the seismic racking behavior of the twin bored tunnels under the existing and new ground cover conditions, EMI performed nonlinear finite-element time-history analysis. In addition, some of the viaduct pile foundations will be installed close to the Red Line tunnels. The impact of lateral pile loading on those tunnels were also evaluated using the finite-element modelling.
