EMI served as the geotechnical engineering design consultant for the Avenue 56 Grade Separation in Thermal (Riverside County), CA. This grade separation project allows traffic along Avenue 56 (also known as Airport Blvd.) to pass above Highway 111 (also known as Grapefruit Blvd.) and the existing Union Pacific Railroad tracks via a two-span bridge. Project improvements also include several retaining walls and new pavement sections.
EMI provided geotechnical and earthquake engineering services including a subsurface field investigation including drilling and lab testing, development of seismic design criteria, foundation recommendations, and pavement structural section recommendations. Geotechnical challenges encountered on this project include hard driving conditions for driven pile foundations, and settlement issues. Lightweight fill was implemented at one of the approach embankments, and a settlement monitoring program was recommended. EMI completed the work on budget and on schedule, with no change orders.
