To improve operations and safety on I-880 near Oakland, California, the existing 29th Avenue and two 23rd Avenue bridge overcrossings will be replaced, and the existing northbound 29th Avenue and 23rd Avenue off- and on-ramps will be reconstructed. To accommodate the bridge replacement and roadway widening, a series of retaining walls including Mechanically Stabilized Embankment (MSE) walls and Caltrans Standard Type 1 retaining walls are proposed.

EMI provided geotechnical field exploration including exploratory borings and soil laboratory testing. Other tasks included evaluation of slope stability, ground settlement, and soil liquefaction potential. EMI performed geotechnical design and prepared foundation reports for Retaining and Sound Walls, Sign Structures, a Materials Report for pavement structural section design and soil corrosion issues for buried drainage devices, and a Geotechnical Design Report.
