The tenant for the Pier 400 Container Terminal desired to locate the Terminal Operations Building very close to the waterfront dike to maximize usable terminal space. The building was to be designed and constructed with appropriate review and approval by the City of Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS).
EMI used state-of-the-art seismic soil-structure interaction analyses and two-dimensional seismic deformation analyses and to design pile foundations that could accommodate lateral ground displacements from earthquake-induced liquefaction. EMI obtained approval of the design methodology by the reviewing agency of Los Angeles. EMI also evaluated slope stability and lateral pile pinning effects to restrain slope deformation to within levels acceptable to the LADBS
