The Mary Avenue Bridge project is a bicycle footbridge taking Mary Avenue over I-280 in the City of Cupertino, CA. Two towers are located at the edges of the freeway, and two end piers are situated on the existing embankments outside Caltrans right-of-way.EMI carried out subsurface exploration for the bridge to provide data for the development of seismic ground motion criteria and to adequately support the foundation design. EMI provided foundation design parameters for 3.3-ft diameter piles and a constructibility assessment.

The project site is situated within the seismically active Bay Area region located between two major faults, the San Andreas fault to the west and the Hayward fault to the east. EMI conducted seismic studies and delivered response spectra for initial design of the cable-stayed bridge and nonlinear time-histories for the final design check.
